Recently installed in the heart of Brewery District and featured in the Vancouver Sun, a large neon sign reads the words: ‘The Sappers Were Here’.

Designed by Neon Works in Coquitlam, the sign is 40 metres long, 2.5 metres tall, and consists of 33 panels that illuminates at night.

The sign incorporates the history and the influential works of the Columbia Detachment of Royal Engineers, otherwise known as ‘Sappers’, who had contributed their services in helping establish the city of New Westminster. The scale, size and neon feature of the sign helps bring attention to the neighbourhood of Sapperton and the group of people it was named after.
